Shenandoah

Shenandoah (Fairley/Lonetree)
There's a certain hue of light that rises from the fields
When the sun bends low before the ridge-line, softens and yields
Hangs suspended on the threshold, bends low, low, lower
Then sinks beneath the mountains that cradle Shenandoah
There's a certain longing deep within these twilights can awake
Like a sudden wind falling upon the stillness of a lake
I watch the last light fade from the fields of Shenandoah
Settle on the high mark, burn deep gold, then pass over
The red sky bleeds to black, gently the night comes falling
From far and wide the stars arrive from their wandering
They crowd into the valley, bend low, low, lower
They are come to shine for their daughter Shenandoah
The wind winds down the valley, Shenandoah calls to me
"We've always been lovers," she cries, "and always shall be"
The wind plays on the fields of gold, this land, the soul of me
And the river running through it all, my song-line to the sea
I hear the music of the river, in dreams it calls to me
It sings of the vast Atlantic, of breathless ecstasy
Many times I've rode that river, times I've drowned and passed over
But always I return to the fields of Shenandoah

Run Wild-cat, Run

Run Wild Cat Run (Fairley/Lonetree)
There's a wild-cat been killing up and down the line
From San Javier to San Julian
And Ignacio de Silva claims he shot her with his gun
But he must be mistaken for the killing still goes on
Chorus
My dreams run with you girl, so run wild-cat, run
Soul of the jungle, heart of the sun, run wild-cat, run
Ranchers spent their nights lying with their guns
Waiting for the cries of cattle, for when that wild-cat comes
But she moves like magic, and faster than the gun
Too fast for Ignacio, too fast for anyone
Chorus
All my hopes run with you girl, so run wild-cat run
Don't let them take you wild cat, keep running and stay free
knowing you're still wild in this world warms the heart of me
They would try to take you, beautiful one
So run and keep running, run wild-cat run
Chorus
My freedom runs with you girl, so run wild cat run
Soul of the jungle, heart of the sun, run wild cat run

A Dancer. A Horse. A Song
I’ve got a horse called Mister Bojangles
Named after the dancer in the song
And yeah, he can dance alright! He’s full of fire
He’s loyal and he’s strong
Bay Waler, burgundy colour
Sixteen hands high
No show-pony, but he’s quick I tell you
The boy can really fly
I like to think of that old dancer in the song
Clicking his heels in his ragged shirt and jumping so high
I think of him as me and Bojangles ride together
Beneath the endless sky
And I think of that poor dancer
Behind those county jail bars
As me and Bojangles ride the boundary line
Free beneath the uncaged moon and stars
And I sing to him…
Chorus
Mr Bojangles, Mr Bojangles
Come on and dance
One time out riding I fell from ol’ Bojangles
His back left hoof split me deep over the chin
It cut me a second mouth to wear
Set in an awful bloody grin
The skin hung loose. It wobbled as I walked
And that new mouth, slurring in stupid stutters, rudely talked
It said; ‘Boy this is serious, real serious you know
Now home is seven miles across the valley, that way I guess, now go
And my heart beat furious inside my breast
The blood, sticky and warm, ran all down my chest
And the wound, so deep and wide, but, don’t you know
I made it home with Mr Bojangles as my guide

Storm-birds
Baby we've been lashed to the wheel for so long
The whole game's rigged, loaded, unjust, plain wrong
Good people work their lives away
Sell their blood to The Company
The government keeps you dancing with a chair and whip
And calls this democracy
Don't tell me time is on our side, I know it's not
If we don't leave soon I fear we never will
I love you, baby, and In a better world that would be enough
But we're so tangled up and loaded down with debt and all this useless stuff
Chorus
What are we gonna do when the wolf comes calling?
And make no mistake, my pretty one, the wolf will come calling
We got debts and I can't keep stalling
I want to fly with you
But I fear we're falling
And all these things we once thought we once had to have
Well they weren't worth the fight
Well an Araukun man once told be, "friend" he said, "friend
"This country here, this country is for traveling light
Look at that storm-bird flying, he said,
He's my brother my totem my blood my kin
High upon the wind with nothing but his majesty
And the liberty of his flight
Well that brother couldn't take his own good advice
The game got him, baby, like it's getting you and me
But out there over the waves, somewhere above the sea
Maybe, just maybe, his spirit's flying free
And maybe the storm-bird is our totem too
Maybe we can break free and fly like that brother wanted too
He was a storm-bird, and you're a storm-bird too
Lets go ride the wind, over the ocean blue
Over the ocean blue

The Healing
04:14
|

The Healing
"This circle is sacred," she cried, join it
"This plant is medicine," she passed it over, I ate of it
"This drum is a horse," I rode it
Into the land of shadows
Chorus
As without, so within
Blood of my blood, kin of my kin
As above, so below
From the four directions the four winds blow
"These visions are snakes," she smiled, "charm them
"This fear is nothing," she laughed, "become it
"This world is a dream, see beyond it
"This death is an old friend, laugh with him and pass right through"
Chorus
As without, so within
Flesh of my flesh, kin of my kin
As above, so below
From the four directions the four winds blow
"This soul is a bird release it to fly
"This sky is a book of omens, she cried, read it
"This land is sacred, walk it
"This life is a dream, dream it
Chorus
As without, so within
Blood of my Blood, kin of mu kin
As above, so below
From the four directions the four winds blow
"These visions are pure," she said, "claim them
"This dawn is the first day of the world, bless it
"This day is all days, live it
"This healing is done," she smiled, "receive it"
Chorus
As above, so below
Flesh of my flesh, kin of my kin
As above, so below
From the four directions the four winds blow

Corazon de Mexico

|

Corazon de Mexico
There was an old moon-faced man
Deep lines ran like rivers all down
Sun-browned cheeks and gentle far-away eyes
- Eyes full of love, full of healing
He was a medicine man
Maestro curandero
Del Estado San Luis Potosi
Living deep in the heart of Mexico
"The medicine is a snake," he smiled
"Oh my friend, can you tame it?
"Eat it and behold the mystery pure and grand
Hear the laughter and understand"
I saw a great tree arise from the dust
I saw it grow and grow
And cascade in living colour
All over the heart of Mexico
Chorus
The old man he sang, my spirit danced
The big yellow moon bent down low
The dust it swirled high, as from the four
Directions the wind did blow
And laughter rode upon it
And voices called from long ago
Calling out from deep within
The heart of Mexico
The heart of Mexico
There were faces in the fire
The visions came falling from the sky
And that old man's eyes full of love
Grinning at me from across the flames dancing high
The light grew red in the desert sky
As out of the ashes we saw
The Phoenix fly
Deep into the heart of Mexico
I watched the sun get up gently
And dance up the sky
I saw the sun-light burst off the mist
In that old man's eye
I let out a laugh I let out a cry
The wind gathered it up
And carried it high and away
Deep into the heart of Mexico
Chorus
Oscuro el mysterio
Oscuro, poco claro
Pero quiero ver
Quiero conocer
Muestra mi la gran vista
Por favor
Muestra mi Maestro curandero
Por que quiero ver

The Gift
(Fairley/Lonetree)
(C) Medicine Road Music
"And God took a handful of Southerly Wind
Blew his breath upon it and created the horse"
- Bedouin Legend
God took a handful of Southerly Wind
So it's told, so it's told
Blew breath upon it and cried, "Behold!
I give you the horse, I give you the horse"
And horse is wind and wind must blow
I give you the horse just so you'll know...
Flight
And so we called him Viento
Viento, Viento
I said "He's fine," she said "I know!
"Andalusean, white as snow
"I watched the fire inside him grow
I felt the rising wild wind blow"
Andalusian white as snow
This horse is wind and now we know...
(The art of) flight
Chorus
Feel the free air. Feel the wild wind blow!
God took a handful of southerly wind
So it's told, so it's told
Blew breath upon it and cried, "Behold!
I give you the horse, I give you the horse"
And horse is wind and wind must blow
I give you the horse just so you'll know...
Flight
Chorus
Feel the free air. Feel the wild wind blow...

Horse Latitudes
05:16
|
|||
I awoke delirious from a restless sleep
The air hung heavy in the tropical heat
The dawning sky, a supernatural red
Scarlet where the moon-light bled
Stained a sea becalmed like molten lead
The sails lay loose and the flags hung dead
The weird light deepened in the dawning sky
I looked hard into the sun, into its terrible eye
As it surged from the sea and rose into the gloom
It threw such a strange light as might precede a Simoom
I felt a presage of doom. My soul filled with dread
But the sea stayed placid and the air stayed dead
Horse latitudes had a hold on me
The breathless air and the drunken sea
The captain ordered the horses pushed over the side
But they swam! How they swam, though they should have died
Somehow they reached an unseen shore
Where a tribe gathered and marvelled at what they saw
Such strange beasts they'd never known before
Swam into their world and changed it forevermore
A noble kinship between them grew
It's an old one now and I'm old too
For that sea finally awoke and that wind finally blew
I alone survived the storm of all the crew
I followed the horses into the blue
Out of the old world and into the new
Horse latitudes had a hold on me
The breathless air and the drunken sea
Now me and Kardiono ride along the shore
Here in the outer islands where the white men come no more
Too much for them to bear, the malarial air
In these lost latitudes, west of nowhere
But I can feel their disease, even from here
Yeah I can feel their disease, smell their fear
The elders tell the history
How the horses came one day from out of the sea

Song Of The Sea
04:58
|
|||
Song of the Sea
When my soul cries for it I go to the sea
To commune with the divine mystery
To banish time and history
To feel the healing waters wash over me
Chorus
The song of the sea, a symphony calling me
Whispers of immortality
Some little wild ecstasy soaring
And there's nowhere I'd rather be
The brooding waters dark and deep
The shifting waters that never sleep
The whispering waters that gently speak
Deep into my soul
I wreck myself on some empty beach
I cast myself beyond all reach
And let the endless waters teach
My soul the art of flight
Chorus
You could try calling out to me
But I won't hear you above the roar of the sea
(On the sand where I lie deep in mystery)
On this far away shore of ecstasy
Where all you hear is the song of the sea
Double Chorus

Rhiannon
04:03
|
|||
Rhiannon (Fairley/Lonetree)
So you want to talk Rhiannon
O.K, but I feel it's been said already, all said and done
Just as all learning is but recollection
There is nothing new under the sun
Chorus
And nothing has been lost, and nothing has been won
You could be free Rhiannon
You could go north for a while
Up into the river country where the wild waters run
There's nothing for us to finish here, for nothing was begun
And I believe the knots we've tied each other in can be undone
Chorus
For to touch the earth, for to touch the sun
You know you're free, you've always been free, Rhiannon
You could be driftwood, you could be dust
You could be a cloud moving low over the plain
You could lose yourself in that space between the land and sky
You could be no-one, everyone, you could just let o and fly
Chorus
You could find peace somewhere under this ol' sun
You could find peace, I know it, sweet Rhiannon
Your mind is clear, your heart is strong, you are still young
Take flight, go find your place in the sun
You know you never lost me, I was never there to be won
But I truly feel this is your time now, your day is begun
Chorus
Your sorrow is not yours alone, it belongs to everyone
It's true, Rhiannon, there's nothing new under the sun

I'm Good With You
04:15
|
|||
I'm Good With You
The air was hot, the moon rose full, her silver light grew and grew
The sweetest tasting zephyr wind blew
The constellations swirled above us in a cascading summer sky
It was a picture, babe, and yeah, I wanted it too
And the life we summoned that night surprised me as much as it did you
But well, that's life isn't it, it flies at you right from the blue
But I don't mind our fates being tied together like they are now
If the truth be told, I'm good with you
It seems everyone's a joker these days, that's true
It seems everyone's looking for something easy to catch, well what's new
Well I'm looking at my future now, here's looking at you
Cause I love you like the eagle loves the wind that drives him high into the blue
Yeah I'm good with you
So we're lashed to the wheel, well if it ain't one wheel it's another
And I could dream a million other dreams, that's true
But I'm happy with this dreaming babe, it's bold and it's new
And I love you like the river loves the rains that give it life, reviving it anew
Yeah, I'm good with you
Well I was way-laid for a spell with this other woman I knew
But it's good to be back in the heartland again
Yeah, I'm good with you

Till I Heard The Laughter
I was a soldier marching in a great army
I painted my canvas with the blood of my enemy
I was a soldier, till I heard the laughter
Now no more will I a soldier be
I was a rich man, I had money
People sold their lives, all their time to me
I was a rich man, till I heard the laughter
Now no more will I a rich man be
I was a preacher man, I preached divinity
I knew all the names of god, the prayers, the liturgy
I was a preacher man, till I heard the laughter
Now no more will I a preacher be
I was a wise man, I spoke philosophy
The wisdom flowed from my lips like sweet honey
I was a wise man, till I heard the laughter
Now no more will I a wise man be
I was a holy man, I spoke of the mystery
And the beauty of my words enchanted even me
I was a holy man, till I heard the laughter
Now no more will I a holy man be
I was a god, I had immortality
I created and destroyed for an eternity
I was a god, man, till I heard the laughter
Now no more will I a god be
Can you hear the laughter?
Can you hear it, on the wind?
